1955년 카렌 카터는 June Carter(카터 페밀리)의 딸로 태어났는데 2살 때에 부모가 이혼을 하였고 자신이 12살 되던 해에 그녀의 어머니가 Johnny Cash와 재혼을 하게 된다.
그러니까 Rosanne Cash와는 이복 자매지간인 셈이다.
Carter/Cash 순회공연에서 백업 싱어를 하는 등 음악에 재능은 많았다.
그녀는 15살 때에 일찍 결혼하였으나 수년도 못가서 이혼을 하고, 또다시 19살에 재혼을 하고 그 이후 여러 차례 결혼과 재혼을 거듭하는 등 결혼과 가정적인 면에서는 파란 많은 인생을 살았다

1978년(23세때) 직업적인 가수가 되기 위하여 Los Angeles 로 가서 Warner Brothers와 레코드 계약을 맺고 앨범을 내기 시작했는데, 80년대 초반까지는 영국에 건너가서 잠시 살았으며 1980년 중반에 미국으로 다시 돌아와서 Carte Family 순회공연에 가담하여 노래를 불러 왔고, 1989년에 다시 레코딩 가수로 복귀하여 종전의 rock 음악 스타일로부터 본격적인 칸츄리 스타일의 노래로 1995년까지는 꽤 많은 힛트 곡을 내었다.

Carlene Carter는 rock 가수로 시작했지만, rock 과 country 스타일 모두에 걸쳐 있으며
그녀의 노래의 가장 큰 특징이라면 힘차고 뚜렷한 목소리에 파워가 있고 가사전달이 뚜렷하다는 것이다.
