It was many and many a year ago
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE; -

And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and She was a child,  
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love -

I and my ANNABEL LEE -
With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven

Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud by night

Chilling my ANNABEL LEE;
So that her high-born kinsmen came,

And bore her away from me,
To shut her up, in a sepulchre.

In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,

Went envying her and me;
Yes! that was the reason
(as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud, chilling.

And killing my ANNABEL LEE.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love.

Of those who were older than we -
Of many far wiser than we -

And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful ANNABEL LEE: -

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams 
Of the beautiful ANNABEL LEE;

And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes

Of the beautiful ANNABEL LEE;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride
In her sepulchre there by the sea -

In her tomb by the side of the sea

 
그 것은 아주 아주 오래 전 이었어요.  바닷가의 한 왕국에, 
당신도 그 이름을 알 수 있을지 모르는 한 소녀가 살았어요. 
아나벨 리라는 이름이었답니다. 
그런데 이 소녀는 다른 생각은 전혀 없이 살았어요. 
나를 사랑하고 나의 사랑을 받는 것 밖에.

나도 어렸고 그 애도 어렸죠.  바닷가 이 왕국에서,
그러나 우리는 사랑 이상의 사랑으로 사랑했어요.
나와 아나벨 리는. 
하늘나라의 날개 달린 천사들도  
그녀와 나 사이를 시샘할 만한 사랑으로

그 때문에 오래 전, 바닷가 이 왕국에서     
한 차례 바람이 구름으로부터 불어와  
아름다운 아나벨 리를 싸늘하게 만들어버렸어요.
그리곤 그녀의 지체 높은 친척들이 와서   
그녀를 내 곁에서 데려가 바닷가 이 왕국 무덤에 가둬버렸죠.

천국에서 우리 반만큼도 행복하지 못한 천사들이  
그녀와 나를 시기한 것이었어요.  
그래요! 그 때문이었죠 (바닷가 이 왕국 사람들은 다 알고 있어요)  
구름으로부터 바람이 몰려와
나의 아나벨 리를 싸늘하게 죽인 것을.

하지만 우리의 사랑은 더 강했답니다.   
우리보다 나이 많은 사람들의 사랑보다   
우리보다 현명한 많은 사람들의 사랑보다요.   
그래서 하늘의 천사들도,
바다 밑의 악마들도   
나의 영혼과 아름다운 아나벨 리의 영혼을 떼어놓지 못해요.

 

달빛이 빛날 때마다 난 언제나 꿈을 꾸거든요,   
아름다운 아나벨 리의 꿈을.   
별들이 뜰 때마다 나는 느껴요,  아나벨 리의 빛나는 눈동자를.   
그래서 나는 밤새도록 내 사랑, 내 생명, 내 신부의 곁에 눕는답니다.   
그 곳 바닷가 무덤,  
파도가 철썩이는 바닷가 무덤 속에서.

에드가 앨런 포우와 그의 아내

 

이 시는 에드가 엘런 포우의 마지막 시로 
에너벨리는 그의 어린 부인 버지니아를 지칭하는 것으로 알려져 있지만

현실적인 상태를 초월한 그의 시적 상상력이 집중된 시로 평가된다.

 

 

운동선수였던 짐 리브스는 대학을 다니면서 아르바이트로 기타교습을 했었다.

무릎부상으로 더이상 운동을 할 수 없게 되자,

 

DJ가 되었다가 가수로 데뷰하여

Distant Drums ,He'll Have to go, Welcome To My World 등

부드럽고 깔끔한 목소리로 많은 히트곡을 냈었다.

1964년 비행기 사고로 타계하였고, 컨트리뮤직 명예의전당에 헌액되었다.

이 곡은 에드가 알란 포우의 시'애나벨리"를 짐 리브스가 낭송한 것이다.
